Senator Allen Introduces Joint Resolution 17 in CA Legislature Supporting Kw’tsán National Monument

On Tuesday, May 28, 2024, Senator Ben Allen (D-24) introduced Senate Joint Resolution 17 (SJR 17) in front of the California State Assembly to show his support for monument designation for Sàttítla Medicine Lake Highlands National Monument and the Kw’tsán National Monument (KNM). If passed, this measure would urge President Joe Biden and Congress to establish these places as national monuments.

To celebrate this outward showing of support, the Ft. Yuma Quechan Tribal Council made the following statement:

“We’d like to express our overwhelming gratitude to Senator Allen for taking an important step in protecting our traditional homelands. This action is a strong testament to his commitment to protecting the state’s precious natural resources. Most importantly, we applaud the Senator’s acknowledgement of Native Science and stewardship. We hope this resolution helps educate a broader audience on the importance of preserving and restoring the balance of sacred landscapes such as Sàttítla and Kw’tsán. The Quechan Tribe looks forward to supporting the advancement of this resolution and urges the California State Legislature to prioritize the swift passage of SJR 17.”

It is expected that SJR 17 will be referred to the Senate Committee on Natural Resources & Water and the Assembly Committee on Water, Parks & Wildlife. For more information on the Kw’tsán National Monument, please visit: https://www.protectkwtsan.org/
