Identification & ICE Raids

Dear Quechan Tribal Members,

Due to President Trump’s recent executive order regarding immigration enforcement, we want to ensure all tribal members are informed and prepared in the event of an encounter with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Tribal ID & Citizenship

We have met with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and they have confirmed that Quechan Tribal IDs are acceptable forms of identification and that Quechan tribal members are United States citizens. However, we still encourage all members to always carry proper identification to avoid unnecessary complications and comply with any instructions to identify yourself.

Know Your Rights

  • Carry Proper Identification – While CBP has assured us that tribal IDs are valid, we recommend carrying:
  • Your Quechan Tribal ID
  • A state-issued ID or Driver’s License (if available)
  • A passport (if available)

Know Your Legal Rights – If approached by ICE or law enforcement:

  • You have the right to remain silent. You do not have to answer any questions about your immigration status or place of birth, although identifying yourself with proper identification may minimize any complications.
  • You have the right to refuse a search. Do not open your door unless ICE presents a warrant signed by a judge.
  • You have the right to an attorney. If detained, ask for legal representation immediately.

What To Do If ICE Conducts a Raid

  • Stay calm and do not run.
  • Show your Quechan Tribal ID if requested.
  • Record or document the situation if safe to do so.
  • Do not sign any documents without legal counsel.
  • Contact tribal leadership or legal support if you or a family member are detained.

Continuing to Monitor the Situation

The Quechan Tribal Council has been actively monitoring this situation and will continue to do so. We are committed to keeping our community informed and will provide updates as necessary.

If you have any concerns or need assistance, don't hesitate to get in touch with the Quechan Tribal Office at (760) 919-3600. If you have any reports of detainment, you can reach Quechan Chief of Police Patrick McCoy at (928) 919-0144

Sincerely,

Quechan Tribal Council
