A statement from the Quechan Tribal Council regarding Hurricane Kay

Quechan Tribal Membership and Community,            

              Forecasters say Hurricane Kay is forming off the Mexican coast, and is expected to impact our area starting Friday through Saturday evening. The Tribal Council & Emergency Management Team ask that you make the necessary arrangements in the event of power outages and possible flooding due to excessive rainfall. If possible please monitor weather forecasts on your mobile devices, local television stations and radio broadcasts, and we will be posting information on our website (www.quechantribe.com), our mobile Emergency text app RedFlag and through our Housing Department resources as well. Also, please keep in contact with your family members who might not have internet or television/radio access.

              In preparation for the storm, please consider building a basic emergency supply kit for you and members of your family based on your individual needs. Please consider the recommended items:

Consider adding the following items to your emergency supply kit based on your individual needs:

  • Masks (for everyone ages 2 and above), soap, hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes to disinfect surfaces
  • Prescription medications
  • Non-prescription medications such as pain relievers etc.
  • Prescription eyeglasses and contact lens solution
  • Infant formula, bottles, diapers, wipes and diaper rash cream
  • Pet food and extra water for your pet
  • Cash or traveler's checks
  • Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records saved electronically or in a waterproof, portable container
  • Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
  • Mess kits, paper cups, plates, paper towels and plastic utensils
  • Paper and pencil
  • Books, games, puzzles or other activities for children
  • Flashlights and batteries
  • First Aid Kit
  • Portable cell phone charger
  • Dried foods and snacks
  • Canned meats, vegetables and fruits
  • Extra water and electrolyte packets
  • A list of Emergency Contacts
  • Utility knife/tools
  • Waterproof tarps
  • Backpack/travel bags with change of clothing and shoes
  • Medication travel containers or coolers

The Quechan Community Center is still open as a Cooling Center, operating from 10am – 8pm daily.

In the event that power outages last longer than 4 hours, the Quechan Paradise Event Center will opened as a temporary shelter.
